18 Must Have Closet Staples

What is a closet staple?

A closet staple is a piece of clothing that you can pair with almost everything. This piece should be on weekly rotation in your wardrobe. It is most likely in a neutral colour (although it doesn't have to be), and can pair back with the other colours in your closet seamlessly. A closet staple is most likely a piece in your wardrobe that is simple, can be layered, mixed-and-matched and is suited to your personal style.

How many clothes do you actually need?

This entirely depends on who you are and what you do. Experts have noted that a total of 74 garments is sufficient. This includes six outfits for work, three outfits for homewear, three outfits for sports, two outfits for festive occasions, plus four outdoor jackets and trousers or skirts. When it comes to closet essentials, these pieces should make up the majority of your wardrobe, while the rest should add a layer of personality, colour and edge.

The importance of finding your neutrals

Finding your neutrals is all about finding the colours that work for you. Neutral’s come in all different kinds of colours and hues. Traditionally, neutrals refer to shades such as black, white, grey and beige. These neutral tones work seamlessly with most colours, and therefore are the easiest pieces to pair back with your wardrobe. However, some people may be colour obsessed, and prefer bright and bold colours as their 'neutrals'. Some may find this easy, while others may struggle pairing colour back with more colour.

A neutral colour is personal to you, which is why we stock a large number of essential basics in both fashion and traditional 'core' colours so that you can find your perfect piece for you.

For the purpose of closet basics, we have chosen to talk specifically about traditional neutral tones like black, white and greys. However, if you would like to know more about colour theory check out The Science To Colour Matching Clothing blog.
