About Our UPF50+ Sun Protective Clothing
What is UPF Clothing?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor — the rating given to clothing and fabrics for their ability to block both UVA and UVB rays from reaching your skin. It is the clothing equivalent of SPF (Sun Protection Factor), which applies to sunscreen. UPF clothing Australia-wide is increasingly recognised as one of the most effective and reliable forms of daily sun protection, particularly in a country with some of the highest UV radiation levels in the world.
A garment rated UPF50+ blocks more than 98% of UV radiation from passing through the fabric. This is the highest classification available, and the standard all Bamboo Body jersey fabrics have achieved.
What is the Difference Between UPF vs SPF?
UPF and SPF measure sun protection in different contexts. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) applies to sunscreens and measures protection against mainly UVB rays — the rays responsible for sunburn. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) applies to fabrics and clothing, and measures broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. A UPF50+ rated garment is broadly equivalent in protection to an SPF50+ sunscreen, but covers the skin it's worn over without needing to be reapplied. Sun protective clothing and SPF sunscreen work best used together — clothing on covered areas, sunscreen on exposed skin.
How Does UPF Fabric Work?
UPF fabric works by acting as a physical barrier between your skin and the sun's UV rays. The tightness of the fabric weave, its composition, colour, and weight all affect how much UV radiation is blocked. Bamboo is a naturally effective UPF fabric because its fibres have a tight, dense structure that limits UV penetration.
What is a Good UPF Rating?
The UPF rating scale works as follows: UPF 15 is rated Good, UPF 30 is Very Good, and UPF 50+ is Excellent. UPF50+ — which is the highest achievable certification — blocks over 98% of UV radiation. All Bamboo Body garments listed as UPF50+ have achieved this maximum rating.
Is UPF Sun Protective Clothing Better than Sunscreen?
Neither replaces the other — they work best in combination. UPF sun protective clothing provides consistent, reliable protection for the areas it covers without the need to reapply. Sunscreen remains essential for all exposed skin — the face, neck, hands, and any areas not covered by clothing. Dermatologists recommend a layered approach: UPF clothing for covered areas, SPF50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen for everything else, plus a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
The advantage of sun protective clothing over sunscreen alone is consistency. Sunscreen degrades, gets washed off with sweat, and is often applied too thinly to be fully effective. A UPF50+ garment delivers reliable protection all day, every wear.
Do I Need to Wear UPF Clothing Every Day in Australia?
In short — yes. Australia and New Zealand have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and UV radiation is present year-round, not just in summer. UV can be high even on cloudy or overcast days, which makes daily sun protective clothing a sensible habit regardless of the season. Bamboo Body's UPF50+ collection is specifically designed for everyday wear — lightweight, breathable, and styled to work at the office, the weekend market, on holiday, or wherever your day takes you.
How Do I Build a Sun Protection Outfit?
For maximum coverage and UV protection, look for styles that cover as much skin as possible while remaining comfortable in warm weather. A well-rounded sun protection wardrobe might include:
- A long sleeve UPF shirt or top — covers the arms and shoulders
- A lightweight bamboo cardigan — for layering over singlets or dresses
- A UPF dress or tunic — longer lengths protect the legs and torso
- UPF pants or trousers — full leg coverage for an extended time outdoors
- A bamboo singlet or shell top — for layering on very warm days
