How to dress for work: what is office wear?

Finding the perfect work outfit may be tricky, especially if you are moving from the corporate world to a more casual environment, or perhaps you are transitioning out of the WFH environment. Although it depends on where the work, note that there are three main work dress codes;

Business Professional Dress Code

Business Professional is all things corporate. It is used in more conservative settings and may require you to wear a business or pant suit, or dress and jacket. Choose classic hues and neutral shades (blacks, whites, navy, grey). We recommend building your wardrobe from the group up - think of those core pieces that you need underneath your blazer. A Shell Top or Ada Boatneck would do the trick.

Business Casual Dress Code

Business casual is essentially a more elevated version of your casual style. Think blouses, blazers and pencil skirts. Business casual allows you to be a bit more creative in your silhouettes. Have fun with colours, and experiment with long-line skirts and midi-dresses. Blend corporate and casual together into a look that you feel comfortable in.

Casual Dress Code

Casual workwear should still look polished, but you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable! Embrace shapes and silhouettes of all types. Invited relaxed fits and comfortable shoes. Add flow into your wardrobe with pieces that drape, such as a relaxed tee or midi dresses.

Tips for workplace dressing

  1. Consider your workplace dresscode. If you are unsure, refer to the points above. If you work in a more formal office setting, it is best to stick to more traditional attire such as suits. As the workplace becomes more casual, you will find you have a bit more leeway to express your personal style. However, there is always a way to get creative! Look at how your coworkers dress and follow suit.
  2. Try a wardrobe refresh. Have a look at what work fashion trends are currently circulating online. If you find one that you like, think about how it will blend into your current wardrobe. Don’t give in to something that you know won’t fit. Be critical and strategic, but also don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone if you want to try something new.
  3. Layer up. Try some new layering techniques. We know how wild the weather can be, and the cool aircon of your office cubicle is no better. Be prepared, and try out some cool new layering techniques that will add interest to your outfit. Read lessons in layering: the ultimate guide.
  4. Accessories. Accessories are a great way to add some personality to your outfit, especially if there is a strict office dress code. Consider adding a statement piece like a bold necklace or a colourful scarf to add some flair to your look.
  5. Invest in your feet! Shoes may make or break an outfit - but they may also make or break your feet. Invest in a high-quality shoes that will support your feet and keep you feeling comfortable throughout the day. Find that balance between style and comfort.
