Styling For You: Maternity

This week we're looking at creating the right looks for your bump - whether you're carrying high or low or are small and curvy. We'll look at our current Autumn/Winter 21 collection and pick what flatters your bump through maternity. Please note that these are general guidelines as every body is different. We understand that shapes come in all different builds, so we've made sure these tips are universally flattering.

With the help of professional stylist, body shape and colour expert, Angela Barbagallo, we dress Bamboo Body employee and newly pregnant, Amanda, so you can get a gauge of how our new AW21 styles look on a pregnant figure. Amanda is 160cm tall (5"2") and usually wears a size small/10 in tops and medium/12 in pants and skirts.

Tips on dressing for your shape

Keep it simple; Your maternity wardrobe doesn't need to be vast. All you need is a few essential everyday pieces that you can keep on high rotation and that match with your existing wardrobe.

Use a belt to dress your bump; in the early stages of pregnancy pair your tops and dresses with a belt. Style the belt over your bump and use an elasticated belt - they will be much more comfortable. Belts finish off an outfit and will accentuate your shape elegantly.

Ruching is your best friend; if you want to show off your curves in a feminine way, anything ruched will add shape and flatter your figure.

Tops for maternity wear

Stretchy tops, in fact anything that has a stretch is ideal to accommodate your growing bump all the way through to the third trimester and post-partum. Fabric like bamboo is thermo-regulating which allows your skin to breathe and won't make you feel uncomfortable and irritable, so this fabric is ideal. In terms of styling, opt for a top that is long in length and either very loose (for extra comfort) or fitted to show off your bump.

Dresses for maternity wear

Bodycon styles are a great option if you want to emphasize your baby bump. Again, opt for a ruched style to flatter your bump and curvy bits (we have styles that will suit every season!). A free-flowing maxi dress won't be restrictive and will feel amazing on. Wrap dresses are also great options as you'll be able to adjust the fit to suit your shape. These styles are wonderful as they contain structure at the top that acts as a support for your bust.

Bottoms for maternity wear

Comfort is everything when choosing pants and skirts. You'll want to make sure your bottoms are high waisted, are a stretchy fabric and have an elastic waistband. Make sure leggings are on your shopping list - they are a must throughout your pregnancy! Styling leggings with a flowy, relaxed top will help you balance out proportions.

Style your bamboo bottoms with either a flowy, relaxed top like our Liv Top or a fitted ruched tee like our Ruched Bamboo Tee.

Jacket for maternity wear

Play around with layers as you'll be able to wear any type of cardigan or jacket. Think versatility and pick a cardigan or jacket that will take you through every season. Our Waterfall Cardigan, pictured below, is one of our most loved maternity pieces as it can be styled many ways. Belt it up with your favourite stretchy belt, tie it at the front to create a short cardigan or wear it as is - the waterfall-like layer at the front will draw attention to your baby bump and looks great paired back with anything!

Our Travel Wrap is also an essential during pregnancy, especially during the cooler months. This style can be used while breastfeeding and can act like a jacket - simply throw over your shoulders (add a belt if you like) and go!
